A new edition of Near Misses in Cardiac Surgery by Myles Edwin Lee, M.D., has just been published. The book contains a new preface by Denton A. Cooley, M.D., from the Texas Heart Institute.
Near Misses in Cardiac Surgery is a resource for the CTSNet's Safety Reporting System and is the template used by CTSNet as a teaching tool for the anonymous reporting of near-disasters by cardiac surgeons around the world.
The book can be purchased through the CTSNet (Amazon) Bookstore.
Book Offerings in CTSNet Bookstore
The following three books written by CTSNet cardiothoracic surgeons have recently become available in the CTSNet Bookstore:
(1) ICU Recall (3rd ed.) by Curtis G. Tribble, Charles E. Hodson, and Nelson L. Thaemert.
The updated Third Edition of ICU Recall facilitates rapid review and memorization with a concise question and answer format. Topics include ethics, pharmacology, radiology, and, especially, ICU-focused questions.
(2) Pioneers of Cardiac Surgery by William S. Stoney.
Heart operations today are quite common and relatively low-risk, but in the beginning it was just the opposite. Cardiac operations were reserved for desperately ill patients. The author documents this dramatic transition with profiles of 38 surgeons, active between 1940 and 1985.
(3) Video Atlas of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery by Anthony PC Yim, Michael KY Hsin and Innes YP Wan.
The goal of this video atlas is to demonstrate a broad range of thoracic procedures which are typically performed using minimally invasive techniques. The text is supplemented with two DVD-ROMS.
--------
These offerings can be found on the Featured Title list, along with a number of other volumes of interest to all branches of cardiothoracic surgery.
The bookstore is a joint venture between CTSNet and Amazon.com, and offers the CTSNet readership optimal pricing on almost all volumes. We encourage you to use the CTSNet Bookstore for all your medical book needs.

ATS Discussion Article - March 2009
ATS March 2009: Thiagarajan RR, Brogan TV, Scheurer MA, Laussen PC, Rycus PT, Bratton SL. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to support cardiopulmonary resuscitation in adults. Ann Thorac Surg 2009;87:778-85.
In this month’s Annals, Thiagarajan, et al., note that extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to support cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has been shown to improve survival in children and adults. In the report (partially excerpted herein), they describe outcome for the use of ECMO to support CPR (E-CPR) in patients >18 years of age. The multi-institutional data come from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) registry, 1992–2007. Two hundred and ninety-seven (11% of 2,633 adult ECMO uses) involved E-CPR. Median age was 52 years, and most patients had cardiac disease (n=221; 75%). Survival to hospital discharge was 27%. Brain death occurred in 61 (28%) of nonsurvivors. In a multivariate logistic regression model, pre-ECMO factors including a diagnosis of acute myocarditis and use of percutaneous cannulation lowered odds of mortality, whereas a lower pre-ECMO arterial pO2 increased odds of mortality. The need for dialysis during ECMO increased odds of mortality. The authors concluded that further studies are warranted to evaluate and better define patients who may benefit from E-CPR. They also note that although survival data are disappointing, all of these patients faced certain mortality without this level of intervention. Is this therapy justified, and will it become standard of care for cardiac centers?
